If you have been to Bali, chances are, you're gonna say Jimbaran. Located south of the airport and by the sea, Jimbaran is heaven for you seafood lovers out there!
I bet you’ve been to the famous Jimbaran seafood restaurants, like Menega or Bela Seafood to name a few. But do you know that us, locals, or at least people who live in Bali, would opted out eating at these ‘overprized’ and ‘touristic’ restaurants- as they say?
So where do we go when we crave for seafood? Kedonganan Fish Market!
What? Where’s that?
Glimpse of the fish market
So Kedonganan Fish Market is an actual fish market! Its is located not far from these famous Jimbaran seafood restaurants. In fact, its only less than 10 mins away. Here, you can find some low-key seafood restaurants that you can order from, but whats better, is that you can actually shop at the actual fish market, and then pay the restaurants to cook the seafood that you just bought at the market!
Bargain your way when buying these seafood, and I promise you after dining here, you’ll regret paying triple the price at the Jimbaran restaurants. I ensure you, it taste exactly the same, even some of my friends claim that it tasted better! Do you know? Some of the food cost almost a quarter to what you’d normally pay at Jimbaran.
I went to the fish market on April 2017, and these are how much I paid for each seafood at the fish market. Please do understand that the market changes every time. So you cant expect to match all the prices with my price. You might get some more expensive than I did depending on the market, vice versa.
Fish: Napoleon fish - Rp. 45.000/kg - excellent for grilling!
Lobster: Rp.300.000/kg - I got 4 LOBSTERS FOR 300.000 I KID YOU NOT.
Tip: opt for the lobster without the head. You’ll get twice as much. Who needs the head anyway.
Squid: Rp. 40.000/kg
I went with 7 people and our total was 115.000 each person, all including rice, veggies, whole coconuts, ice teas and FOUR FREAKN LOBSTERS. Without the lobsters, our total would be around 65.000/person for ALL THAT FOOD. Did I mentioned that we ordered 7kg of clams? :D
Ask your local driver, or taxi driver about Kedonganan Fish Market, they certainly know what I’m talking about and why we never go to those overpriced restaurants. Chances are, they bought the seafood from here too, it is the fish market anyway! Wanna know a secret why if you mentioned "seafood" your drivers will locate you to those touristic Jimbaran restaurants? For every customer they refer and bring there, they will get commission. That is why whenever you ask for seafood they will bring you there. But is it the best? Hmm.
I heard from numerous people that it is advisable to come here during the daytime, since it is the fish market, the earlier you come here, the fresher the seafood are.
