Ubud is most probably my favourite area in Bali. It is the most peaceful, beautiful and relaxing. Pure bliss. One of my favourite thing about Ubud is their unique hotels and accommodations. So many places to stay with such beautiful scenery with a fraction of what you pay at Seminyak! Lucky me, I found this dreamy bamboo house at Airbnb.
Coolest bamboo house ever
I've never stayed in a bamboo house before and certainly nothing 5 meters up the ground! It's one of the most unique thing I've ever discovered in Ubud. Netheless to say, I was more than excited to spend a night here!
Before confirming your booking at Airbnb, be sure to check which room do you want to stay at. Airbnb lists the room individually. Bamboo birds nest 1 indicates the room in level 1, bamboo birds nest 2 indicates the room in level 2 and so on. Note that there is minimal lighting in the area, so when you are climbing to your room at night it would be super dark. Get a friend to help you light the stairs when you are climbing up, it helps a LOT, even from just your phone.
The bathroom is an open bathroom, with just a fabric as the door. Don't worry it's not visible from the outside! You're gonna share the bathroom with 3 other rooms. The open living room area is also shared. You could chill at either the open living area right in front of the rooms or at the Firefly hotel living area. I prefer the one at Firefly cause its more comfortable (sofa beds), better view and a few steps away from the tiny swimming pool (ideal for a dip not for swimming) and a swing that overlooks the rice fields. The living space is also a restaurant. But the foods here are so expensive that I didn't even order anything. Vegetarian Balinese nasi campur was Rp.100.000. I could get 4 nasi campur for that price at central Ubud.
Swing overlooking the rice fields at the lobby
I would recommend to stay at level 2. Just because the room at level 2 I think has a better view. Level 3 and 4's view is blocked by the straw so you won't able to gaze at the beautiful surroundings from your room). I stayed at the fourth and highest room because I thought it has the best view. My room was around 5 meters high. Also its pretty tiring to climb up the fourth room, especially if you need a bathroom break. Man I wished I stayed at the second one. Lol.
It's a steep set of stairs. So please be VERY careful. don't pick the highest one if you are afraid of heights or just unsure with your ability to climb the stairs. It's not that easy and need some tries before getting used to it.
At first I was quite worried about mosquitoes cause its an open room, but there is NONE! It's probably because Ubud is quite chilly. But be aware that there are ants! So bring a bug spray (I'd recommend to buy natural bug sprays like the one I got from Utama Spice, not the commercial ones. safer for your skin!) and you'll be okay!
Isn't it just pure bliss?
At night, it was pretty breezy so the temperature is perfectly fine to sleep! I was pretty nervous before as the room didn't have any fan or air conditioning (duh) but I had a good nights sleep! The sound of the river was so peaceful it became by lullaby. One thing to notice is that you'd have to be quite here cause it's an opened and share space so you have to respect others. But isn't peace and serenity the reason you pick places like this to stay anyway? :) Oh and also every time someone in one of the rooms is moving or climbing up or down the stairs the entire bamboo house will feel the room moving. Lol. Its just like sleeping in a yacht (blog on that coming soon!)
walking path to the bamboo nest
The location was also a big plus. It is in the middle of a rice fields but actually REALLY close to Ubud main road (Jln. Raya Ubud). If you use a motorbike (very recommended!) it's only around 3 minutes away (not including the rice field walk). To arrive at the bamboo house you have to travel through the rice fields and as the path is so small, you could only do it via bike, motorcycle or foot. It's around 5 minutes to walk through the rice fields.
But come on look at the view! Wish I could stay here longer but I've got plans back in Seminyak. It's such a unique sleeping experience unlike any that I have tried. So happy that I decided to stay here in this bamboo house.
If you're in Bali but on a budget, Ubud is definitely where you should check out. They have the best and most unique accommodation at a fraction of what you pay at Seminyak. The price of the rooms here varies but more or less the same. I paid around Rp.200.000 for my room via Airbnb. Isn't it great.
By the way, if you are interested with this accommodation but think this is a little bit too extreme for you, firefly has another room that has much more privacy and space than the bamboo nest but with the same spectacular view. The house is made from bamboo as well and you have the whole house to yourself. It's a bit more pricey but so worth it! It's around Rp. 600.000 but with private bathroom.
